When most people think about the fire department, they picture flashing lights, sirens, and crews responding to emergencies.
That’s the part above the surface.
But like an iceberg, what the community sees is only a small portion of the story.
At Round Hill Volunteer Fire & Rescue, the majority of the work happens below the waterline — unseen, steady, and essential.
🚨 Above the Surface
This is what you see:
- Emergency responses
- Fire suppression
- EMS transport
- Public events
- Standbys at community gatherings
- School visits and safety demonstrations
- Crews in uniform serving with pride
It’s visible. It’s important. And it’s only the tip.
❄️ Below the Surface
What you don’t see is what makes everything possible:
The Training
Hours of classes. Certifications. Recertifications. Scenario drills.
Volunteers studying after work. Practicing on weekends. Preparing for calls they hope never come.
The Maintenance
Apparatus checks. Equipment testing. Inventory tracking. Cleaning. Restocking. Repairs.
Making sure every truck, tool, and supply is ready — before it’s ever needed.
The Administration
Budgets. Grants. Fundraising. Sponsorships. IT systems. Recruitment. Compliance. Policies.
Board meetings. Emails. Planning sessions. Website updates. Social media.
Volunteers who may never ride a truck — but keep the organization running.
The Mental & Physical Load
Late-night calls followed by early-morning jobs.
The emotional weight of difficult scenes.
Supporting one another quietly after tough incidents.
Making space for wellness, peer support, and recovery.
The Family Sacrifice
Missed dinners. Interrupted holidays.
Spouses and kids who share their loved ones with the community.
Why This Matters
Volunteer agencies don’t function because people “have time.”
They function because people make time.
Every call answered.
Every form filed.
Every fundraiser planned.
Every apparatus maintained.
Every social media post.
Every budget line reviewed.
It’s all part of the same mission.
And right now — like many volunteer organizations — we feel the weight of how much is carried by a small number of people.
There’s a Place for You Here
Not everyone wants to run into a burning building or ride in the back of an ambulance.
That’s okay.
We also need:
- Drivers
- Administrative volunteers
- Event support
- IT help
- Fundraising assistance
- Recruitment ambassadors
- Committee members
- Behind-the-scenes organizers
If you have skills, time, ideas, or simply a heart for your community — there is a place for you below the surface.
And below the surface is where the real strength lives.
To Our Current Volunteers
We see what you carry.
We see what you give.
Even when no one else does.
Thank you for being the part of the iceberg that keeps everything afloat.
